Field of View Calculator
Horizontal, vertical and diagonal angle of view, and frame coverage at any distance.
Field of View gives the angle a lens sees on a given sensor, and how wide and tall the frame is at a given distance. Enter the recorded area of the mode you shoot, not just the sensor's headline size, and turn on Anamorphic to widen the horizontal angle by the squeeze factor.

| Lens and sensor | Horizontal | Vertical | Diagonal | Frame at 3 m |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 mm, full frame 36 × 24 mm | 39.6° | 27.0° | 46.8° | 2.16 × 1.44 m |
| 35 mm, Super 35 24.89 × 18.66 mm | 39.1° | 29.9° | 47.9° | 2.13 × 1.60 m |
| 25 mm, Micro Four Thirds 17.3 × 13 mm | 38.2° | 29.1° | 46.8° | 2.08 × 1.56 m |
Anamorphic
| Lens, squeeze and sensor | Horizontal | Vertical | Frame at distance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 mm 2×, Super 35 24.89 × 18.66 mm | 52.9° | 21.1° | 9.96 × 3.73 m at 10 m |
| 40 mm 1.5×, full frame 16:9 36 × 20.25 mm | 68.0° | 28.4° | 6.75 × 2.53 m at 5 m |
What you enter
- Focal length (mm), with presets 14, 24, 35, 50, 85 and 135
- Distance to the subject: meters, or feet when the app is set to Imperial, with presets from 1 to 50 m
- Sensor width (mm), with presets 36, 24.89, 23.6, 22.3, 17.3 and 13.2
- Sensor height (mm), with presets 24, 18.66, 15.6, 14.9, 13 and 8.8
- Anamorphic on or off, with squeeze presets 1.25, 1.33, 1.5, 1.8 and 2.0× or a custom factor
What you get
- Horizontal and vertical angle of view (degrees), with the diagonal angle as a detail row
- Frame width and height covered at the distance, in meters or feet
- The formula with your numbers in it
- A warning when the horizontal angle reaches 170°, where a rectilinear lens stops making sense
How CineMath works it out
- Angle = 2 × atan(sensor dimension ÷ (2 × focal length)), for width, height and diagonal
- Coverage = 2 × distance × tan(angle ÷ 2), which is the same as distance × sensor dimension ÷ focal length
- Anamorphic: the horizontal angle and frame width use sensor width × squeeze; the vertical angle, frame height and diagonal figure use the sensor as entered
- Uses the focal length as marked, which is exact at infinity focus; it does not model focus breathing, so close-up coverage runs slightly large
