Anamorphic Calculator
Desqueezed aspect ratio and horizontal-equivalent spherical focal length for any squeeze.
Anamorphic shows what a squeeze does to the frame: the recorded and desqueezed aspect ratios, the desqueezed image width, and the spherical focal length with the same horizontal view. Use it to check that a lens and sensor mode land on your delivery ratio before the camera test.
Worked examples
| Setup | Recorded | Desqueezed (exact, result line) | H-equivalent lens |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2× squeeze, 24.89 × 18.66 mm, 40 mm lens | 4:3 | 2.67:1 | 20 mm |
| 2× squeeze, 20.22 × 16.95 mm (ALEXA 35 3.3K 6:5), 50 mm lens | 1.19:1 | 2.39:1 | 25 mm |
| 1.8× squeeze, 24.89 × 18.66 mm, 75 mm lens | 4:3 | 2.40:1 | 42 mm |
| 1.33× squeeze, 24.89 × 14.00 mm (16:9), 40 mm lens | 16:9 | 2.36:1 | 30 mm |
What you enter
- Squeeze ratio: 1.25, 1.33, 1.5, 1.8 or 2.0×, or a custom factor such as 1.65
- Sensor width (mm), with presets 36, 24.89, 23.76, 22.3 and 17.3
- Sensor height (mm), with presets 24, 18.66, 13.37, 14.9 and 13
- Focal length (mm), with presets from 24 to 135
What you get
- Recorded aspect ratio
- Desqueezed aspect ratio, given to two decimals in the result line
- Desqueezed width (mm)
- Horizontal-equivalent spherical focal length, to the nearest millimeter
- The formula with your numbers in it
How CineMath works it out
- Desqueezed aspect = (sensor width × squeeze) ÷ sensor height
- Desqueezed width = sensor width × squeeze
- Horizontal-equivalent focal length = focal length ÷ squeeze
- Only the horizontal is stretched: the vertical angle of view stays that of the marked focal length
